In a shocking incident that unfolded on May 23, Richard Bowser, a 44-year-old from Bishop Auckland, was sentenced to 18 months in jail after leading police on a dangerous, drug-fueled pursuit in his high-powered Bentley Continental GT. Having consumed a significant amount of cocaine, Bowser, who was already wanted for assault, sped away from officers on the A68, reaching terrifying speeds of up to 130mph while overtaking traffic.
Eyewitnesses described the chaos as Bowser executed reckless maneuvers, darting past vehicles and pedestrians, with one witness detailing the horror of a young girl watching as the Bentley zoomed by. The pursuit escalated until Bowser attempted to take a sharp turn at 90mph, colliding with a stationary police car. Astonishingly, despite the severe damage to both vehicles, he continued for another half-mile, littering the road with debris.
Eventually, Bowser fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by officers. Following a failed roadside breath test and drug wipe, he faced multiple charges, including dangerous driving and drug driving. At Durham Crown Court, he was convicted and disqualified from driving for 45 months, in addition to a £156 victim surcharge.
Inspector Ian Leach condemned Bowser’s reckless behavior, emphasizing the potential for catastrophic consequences. This case serves as a stark reminder that high-performance vehicles require responsible drivers behind the wheel. Bowser’s Bentley is now a write-off, and he must pass an extended driving test before being allowed to drive again.
