On July 1, 2023, at approximately 2:15 AM, Patrolman Samuel Greendyk from the Montville Township Police Department observed a 2009 Dodge Caliber driving erratically on River Road. Following the vehicle, he noticed it swerving in a dangerous manner. The driver, identified as 20-year-old Karina Armando, voluntarily pulled over onto Kanouse Lane. Despite claiming she hadn’t consumed alcohol, her behavior suggested impairment.
Officer Thomas French arrived to assist as Greendyk proceeded to administer field sobriety tests. During the tests, Karina exhibited noticeable difficulties. When asked to recite the alphabet from “E” to “P,” she did so but hesitated briefly. In the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, her eye movements raised concerns about her sobriety. She struggled with the Walk and Turn test, failing to maintain balance, and also had difficulty during the One Leg Stand test.
Given her erratic driving behavior, incoherent responses, and poor performance on the tests, Greendyk arrested her for driving under the influence. At the police headquarters, Karina refused to provide breath samples, invoked her Miranda rights, and declined to answer further questions. Ultimately, she was released pending a court appearance, with her father signing a form. Karina received summonses for several charges, including driving while intoxicated and refusal of breath testing.
